I couldn't figure out a pattern to tell who was affected. However, it is worth knowing that the bug doesn't affect all users – Google Maps runs properly on my iPhone 15 Pro connected to CarPlay wirelessly. If you haven't updated Google Maps, you might want to delay the process, at least until Google confirms a fix. Meanwhile, you should try the permission settings reset or run the application in full screen until Google comes up with a patch. However, Google also shipped an emergency update today (version 6.98.1), though it's unclear if it addresses the CarPlay glitch. Newest Earth Maps (street view), Satellite map, Get Directions, Find Destination, Real Time Traffic Information 24 Hours, View Now. It was released on January 9, and considering most iPhones are configured to receive new app updates automatically, it's not surprising that the problem has become widespread. with maps, driving directions, satellite maps. The Google Maps version believed to be responsible for the bug is 6.97.0. Nothing seems to bring it back to full working condition, so Google should probably look into these reports and release a fix ASAP. Users claim the app runs on the smartphone, but it fails to load the Dashboard interface even when the iPhone is unlocked. However, I'd still try a permission setting reset, as Google Maps occasionally forgets what it's allowed to access on your iPhone. Users who turned to reddit to report the error claim they hadn't changed anything before installing the latest update, so the new version is probably the culprit for the problem. Google Maps doesn't typically load on the CarPlay Dashboard unless it's allowed to "always" access your location, so unless the settings are configured correctly, it would only work in full-screen mode. I've hit the same problem several times throughout 2023, and in every case, a simple reset of the app's permission restored the expected behavior. The bug an increasing number of users are currently struggling with comes and goes in the Google Maps world. Google Maps fails to load the Dashboard interface, leaving users with just one option: to run the application in full-screen mode. However, while Google Maps successfully replaces Apple Maps, particularly thanks to more advanced features such as satellite navigation and better maps, it's not always the most reliable choice. Google Maps is often the go-to choice for users searching for a more advanced navigation experience. Users who installed the latest Google Maps version on their iPhones claim the application no longer loads on the CarPlay Dashboard, leaving the navigation card empty with its icon at the center. However, the thing I'll highlight today is what's rapidly becoming a widespread bug in the Apple user base. The 504 Plan is a roadmap that describes in detail the accommodations your child will receive in the least restrictive environment at school and, as relevant, in other DOE programs and activities. If your child is determined eligible for accommodations, the 504 Coordinator fills in the 504 Accommodation Plan Template (504 Plan) with 504 Team (including parent) input and based upon the relevant documentation described above. The 504 Team will decide if the suggested accommodations are appropriate, and if so, how to provide them at school. The doctor may suggest that the school provide certain accommodations. Your child’s doctor must complete the Medical Accommodations Request Form. Parents and school staff may bring any information they believe best describes the child’s abilities and needs.ĭiagnosis and Suggestions from Your Child’s Doctor This will help the Team understand your child’s abilities, achievement, behaviors, and health needs. The 504 team will review information which comes from different sources, such as your child’s tests, observations, work samples, report cards, and medical records. What Information is Reviewed at the Meeting? If you would like interpretation services at the 504 Team meeting, please inform your school's 504 Coordinator.Īs soon as possible, and no later than 5 school days (unless additional time is necessary to accommodate a parent’s schedule) after DOE’s receipt of the Diabetes Medication Administration Form, the school will convene a meeting with the parent, a school administrator, the 504 Coordinator, school nurse, and if possible Office of School Health member (e.g., Borough Nursing Director, Nursing Supervisor, Diabetes Team Member, health care provider), to discuss the student’s needs between when the Diabetes MAF is complete and ready to implement and when a final 504 Plan is signed and implemented, such as staff training on hypo- and hyperglycemia, blood glucose monitoring, insulin administration, and accommodations such as access to food and water during the school day. Where health services are requested, the school nurse, or Office of School Health member (e.g., Borough Nursing Director, Nursing Supervisor, Diabetes Team Member, health care provider) must be a member of the 504 Team. Share information about the accommodations that may meet your child’s needs.(For example, the school social worker or nurse may attend.) (For example, your child’s teacher or guidance counselor may attend.) Talk about your child’s abilities and skills. The 504 meeting must also include at least one person in each category below who can: They understand the information that is being reviewed and know the types of accommodations that may meet your child’s needs. The 504 Team meeting is attended by the parent, and people who know your child’s abilities. Who goes to the 504 accommodations meeting (504 Team meeting)? Steps After Parent Submits 504 Accommodation Request, and Review Process If you would like interpretation services at the 504 meeting, please inform your school's 504 Coordinator. As explained below, you will be part of the school-based 504 Team that meets to discuss your request and other relevant information about your child and decides if your child is eligible for accommodations and if so, which accommodations are appropriate. The 504 Coordinator will contact you to schedule a meeting. Once the correct forms are submitted to the school (described below), each student’s case is reviewed individually. The major life activity substantially limited need not be "learning" for a student to be eligible for 504 accommodations.ĭoes your child have an impairment that substantially limits them in any of the life activities listed above? The data crunchers at Mountain View, California’s Internet giant Google wasted little time in taking advantage of the new resource.Īt the end of 2010, Google unveiled its Google Earth Engine, a cloud computing platform for accessing and processing Landsat images of the planet going back about 40 years. “In 2008, they made the decision-which I refer to as ‘institutionally courageous’-to distribute those data at no cost to those requesting it,” he says. He and colleagues within USGS continued the push to make it all publicly available for free. USGS agreed to reduce the cost to $600, but, Irons says, that was still prohibitive to anyone who wanted global data. “Prior to 1999, when we launched Landsat 7, Landsat 4 and 5 had been operated by a private firm, and their cost per scene had gone up as high as $4,400, which very few people could afford,” says James Irons, Landsat Data Continuity Mission Project scientist at Goddard Space Flight Center, where the Landsat program has been housed since its inception. These second-generation Landsat sensors collect grayscale data across the visible spectrum at a 15-meter spatial resolution, as opposed to the first MSS’s 80-meter resolution, and also uses seven visible and infrared bandwidths for imaging and measuring temperature, at resolutions of 30 and 60 meters. Even after the government resumed control of the program in 1999, the government still charged several hundred dollars for a single image, making global analyses cost-prohibitive.īy then, the Thematic Mapper aboard Landsat 5 and the Enhanced Thematic Mapper-Plus aboard Landsat 7 satellite had become the primary Earth imagers, replacing the MSS sensor aboard Landsat 5 and the prior Landsat satellites. Operations of the fourth and fifth Landsat satellites were turned over to the private sector, leading to dramatic price increases, with the cost of a single Landsat image rising to several thousand dollars. But as the paper’s authors explain, “It was believed with certainty that the data and imagery would have commercial, as well as public value” if more of it could be collected.Įarly attempts at public-private partnerships to facilitate commercialization may have further hampered broader results. Gaps in time data, coarse imagery, and the need for more input from other systems hampered any comprehensive results. However, as noted in the 1997 paper, “The Landsat Program: Its Origins, Evolution, and Impacts,” none of the early attempts at using satellite data to address global issues like food security, desertification trends, resource sustainability, and deforestation impacts led to more profound, worldwide applications. Images from the MSS were proven effective for improving crop predictions in Kansas and were used to monitor clear-cutting of forests in Washington and evaluate compliance with timber harvest licenses. Flood dynamics along the Mississippi River and Cooper’s Creek in Australia were studied for disaster assessment. Landsat 1 data were used to monitor water levels of Lake Okeechobee and build a better understanding of Miami’s local ecology and its water needs. Now that researchers could access calibrated images of the same areas over the course of the seasons and years, attention moved away from merely building libraries of the spectral signatures of Earth’s features and toward monitoring changes and patterns over time. The MSS sent back 300,000 images over its six-year lifespan and changed scientists’ approach to remote sensing, adding the dimension of time to analyses of Earth’s resources and surface covers. After launch, the engineers at NASA and the scientists at the US Geological Survey (USGS)-who would manage the project once the satellite was in orbit-were shocked at the high fidelity of the data the chattering imager sent back, and it almost immediately became the vehicle’s primary imager. Expectations for the scanner, whose scan mirror buzzed distressingly during testing as it whirred back and forth at 13 times per second, were low.Īmong the concerns voiced before launch were fears that its moving parts would not work properly in space, but it was also unknown whether a scanner could produce high-quality digital imagery while careening around the planet at a speed of 14 orbits per day. When NASA launched the Earth Resources Technology Satellite, later known as Landsat, in July 1972, the first spacecraft dedicated to monitoring Earth’s surface carried two imaging instruments-a camera and an experimental multispectral scanner (MSS) that recorded data in green and red spectral bands and two infrared bands. Klondike Solitaire, often simply referred to as “Solitaire,” is a timeless card game that has been captivating players for generations. It’s easy to think of light, and other forms of energy, as continuous. Furthermore, the radiation predicted by the Rutherford model would have been a continuous spectrum of every color – in essence white light that when passed through a prism would display all of the colors of the rainbow (Figure 1).ī. However, for the most part, atoms are stable, lasting literally billions of years. Unfortunately, this same system predicted that electrons orbiting in the manner that Rutherford described would lose energy, give off radiation, and ultimately crash into the nucleus and destroy the atom. Rutherford’s planetary model of the atom was based upon classical physics – a system that deals with physical particles, force, and momentum. While Rutherford’s model explained many observations accurately, it was found to have flaws. Like so many before him, Bohr built upon the work of his predecessors, and for Bohr, part of that foundation had been built by Ernest Rutherford.īased upon a series of experiments, Rutherford proposed the planetary model of the atom in which electrons swirled around a hard, dense nucleus (see Atomic Theory I: The Early Days). The most intense period of progress took place between the late 19 th and early 20 th century, and it hinged heavily on the work of a Danish physicist named Niels Bohr. But that was all about to change, and quite dramatically. Given that many centuries had elapsed between the earliest ideas of the atom and Dalton’s work, it would be fair to say that the evolution of atomic theory had been a gradual one, with progression in the field being steady rather than spectacular. French chemists Antoine Lavoisier and Joseph Proust, with their Law of Conservation of Mass in 1789 and Law of Definite Proportions in 1799, respectively, each laid the groundwork for Englishman John Dalton’s work on the Law of Multiple Proportions (Dalton, 1803). The story of atomic theory first encounters reproducible, scientific (evidence based) proof in the late 18th century. In fact, one could argue that the history, struggle, and achievement that is threaded through the development of understanding matter at the atomic level is the quintessential story of the scientific method. This gradual, logical progression, where atomic structure evolved from being a simple, philosophical idea, through to the ultra-sophisticated world of the Higgs boson particle discovered in the early part of the 21 st century, represents a wonderful example of the evolution of a scientific idea, and the application of the scientific process. (You can read more about this is in our modules Early Ideas about Matter: From Democritus to Dalton and Atomic Theory I: The Early Days.) Despite the slow pace, it is crucial to understand that the process was a methodical one as each scientist built upon earlier ideas. Starting with the ancient Greeks, and moving through to the beginning of the 19th century, the story unfolds relatively slowly. The earliest ideas about matter at the atomic level were built over many centuries.
